Deine Daten liegen in Deutschland, in Frankfurt.

English

Last updated 27 October 2026. The German version is binding; this English version is a translation.

1. Who we are

This policy covers the Sunny app. Sunny introduces verified students at TUM, LMU and Hochschule München to people worth meeting, based on your profile, your answers to Sunny's questions and your own choices in the app. The company responsible for your data is Sunny Introductions Inc., 2810 North Church Street, Wilmington, DE 19802, USA. Our legal notice (Impressum) is at sunnyyy.com/impressum. Your data is stored in Germany, in Frankfurt. For anything on this page, or to exercise any of the rights below, write to info@sunnyyy.com.

2. Identity verification: student card and selfie

To confirm you're a real, currently enrolled student at TUM, LMU or Hochschule München, we scan your student card and take a selfie. A liveness check runs on your own iPhone: the front camera's face tracking (Apple's ARKit) watches for a blink. This face-tracking data stays on your iPhone. It is used only for that check, never stored, and never sent to us or anyone else. From the card we read your name, your university and, where the card shows it, your date of birth. The card and the selfie are compared by AWS in Frankfurt. The selfie image is never saved: it's used for that one request and then discarded. The student card image is kept for up to 30 days, as described in section 3. What we do keep is a mathematical "fingerprint" of your face (not a photo), only so we can tell if the same face is used to open a second account. We record the internal ID it's stored under so it can be found and deleted on request.

3. Student card image kept for review

We keep the scanned student card image (never the selfie) in a private file store in Frankfurt for at most 30 days, so a person can spot-check a sample of cards by hand, because automatic checks alone can be fooled by a doctored card carrying the right face. After 30 days the image is deleted.

4. Your answers to Sunny's questions

Sunny gets to know you through short questions ("Fragen"). You answer by tapping, typing or dictating, and you can add a photo to an answer. Your answers are stored in Frankfurt; answer photos are kept in a private file store in Frankfurt. To work with your answers, Sunny uses an AI model on Microsoft Azure AI Foundry in Germany (region Germany West Central, Frankfurt): it checks that an answer fits its question, and it picks your next questions from what you've answered so far. If you add a photo, the AI looks at it and writes one short sentence about what it shows (a place, an activity, things), never about how anyone looks. That sentence is stored with your answer. Incognito questions (the ones with a black background) are private: your answer is stored with us, but it is never sent to the AI, never used for introductions, never shown on your profile, and nobody else sees it. Microsoft processes your data on our behalf, does not use it to train its models, and may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse before deleting it.

Some questions are about who you'd like to date and how serious you are about it. Those answers can reveal your sexual orientation, a special category of data under Art. 9 GDPR. We use them only to make introductions; they are never sold, never shown to anyone outside an introduction, and never used for advertising.

5. What Sunny notes about you

Once a night, Sunny turns what you've done in the app (which questions you answered, edited, skipped or were shown, and your shareable answers) into a few short notes about you, so it can ask better questions and suggest better introductions. These notes are for Sunny only and are never shown to other users. You can read them in your data export (section 15). We keep the newest version; older versions are deleted after 90 days. Your profile photos are not analysed by the AI, and the selfie from your ID check never is.

6. Quality and safety logs

For quality and safety, every call to the AI model is logged: which model, how many tokens, what it cost and how long it took. We also keep a sample of the actual exchanges so we can check Sunny is behaving well. A sampled exchange is what was sent for you (for example your answer) and the AI's reply, never the instructions we give the model. During our closed test every exchange was kept; now we keep roughly 1 in 10, plus every exchange our safety checks flag (for example as an attempted jailbreak or spam).

7. Introductions and messages

When Sunny introduces you to someone, both of you read one short introduction message explaining why. The AI drafts it from both profiles and your shareable answers, never from incognito answers. The other person sees your profile (name, photos and the details you fill in) and that message. Messages you exchange with people you're introduced to are stored in AWS DynamoDB in Frankfurt. If you decline an introduction, you can tell us why: a reason you tap and, if you like, up to 1000 characters of your own words. That feedback is stored with the introduction, is never shown to the other person, and helps Sunny make better suggestions.

8. Dictation

If you dictate an answer or a message instead of typing it, the recording is turned into text by a speech model on Microsoft Azure AI Foundry in Germany, the same service as in section 4. We don't keep the recording; Microsoft may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse. It does not leave the EU.

9. Reporting and blocking

You can report someone from their profile or from your chat with them. A report is stored on our servers together with what you tell us, a person on our team reviews it within 24 hours, and we can remove content and ban the account. Reports stay after an account is deleted (section 15). When you block someone from their profile or a chat, the block is saved on your phone: that person disappears from your app. It is not stored on our servers, so after a reinstall or on a new phone you would need to block again; if someone is bothering you, report them as well so our team can act.

10. Phone number, contacts and blocked contacts

Your phone number is how you sign in and how we stop the same person creating several accounts. Sign-in codes are sent by SMS through Twilio, a US company, which receives your number only to deliver the code. Under Settings, "Blocked contacts", and when you sign up, you can name people you never want to be introduced to, even if they haven't joined yet. For that, our servers keep only a one-way code made from their number (a keyed hash that cannot be turned back into the number), never the number itself or a name, and compare it with the same code for anyone who signs up. The person is never told. To make this easy, Sunny can ask for access to your contacts. If you allow it, the phone numbers in your address book are sent to our servers only as those one-way codes. Names never leave your phone. We use them for one purpose only: keeping people you don't want to meet away from you. You can skip this, and switch off access in the iOS Settings at any time.

11. Crash and error reports

If the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, a report is sent to Sentry, hosted in the EU. We strip your name, phone number, email and the contents of any request from that report before it's sent. A stack trace is diagnosis, not a copy of your data. Crash reports are kept for 2 years, then deleted.

12. Product analytics

We use PostHog, hosted in the EU, to see where people get stuck: for example, how many finish setting up a profile, or where they stop. It receives a short list of fixed events (an ID scan started, a question answered, an introduction opened) and nothing you type: no names, no messages, no free text of any kind, and nothing about who you're interested in. You are identified to it only by your Sunny ID, never by phone number, email or name. Session recording is off, and we ask PostHog to discard your device's IP address. We do not use it to track you across other apps or websites, and we do not sell what it collects.

13. Location

Sunny does not ask for your location and does not use it. If you tell us which city you're in, we store that city and nothing more precise. If a later version uses location, this policy will say so before it happens.

14. Where your data is and who sees it

The app's database, sign-in and file storage run on Supabase in Frankfurt. Messages, rate-limit records and anything left from the chat with Sunny in earlier versions of the app are in AWS DynamoDB in Frankfurt, and photos in a private AWS file store in Frankfurt. Identity verification runs on AWS in Frankfurt. The AI model and dictation run on Microsoft Azure AI Foundry in Germany. Crash reports go to Sentry and analytics to PostHog, both hosted in the EU. Sign-in codes are sent by Twilio in the USA. Some of these providers belong to US companies. Where data can reach the USA (Twilio for your phone number, and any access by a provider's US parent), the transfer rests on the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework (Art. 45 GDPR) where the provider is certified, and otherwise on the EU Commission's standard contractual clauses (Art. 46 GDPR). Inside Sunny, a small team can see profiles, photos, introductions and reports, only to handle reports and keep the service safe.

We never upload the names in your contacts, and we use your contacts for nothing but blocking (section 10). We don't sell your data, we don't show your profile or your answers to advertisers, and we don't use your data to serve ads.

15. Your rights

You can access, correct, export or delete your data at any time under Settings, "Your data". "Take a copy" opens the iOS share sheet with one file you can save or send. It holds your profile, your answers, the notes Sunny wrote about you, your messages, what was sent to the AI for you and what it cost, your blocked contacts, your feedback on introductions, your verification attempts, reports you've filed, your app feedback, and anything left from the chat with Sunny in earlier versions of the app. "Delete account and data" removes your profile, your face fingerprint, your answers, your messages and everything else tied to your account, usually within a few minutes. Two exceptions: a report you filed about someone stays with that person's case, and a report someone filed about you is kept for trust and safety with your identity removed from it. There is currently no way to delete only your face fingerprint while keeping the rest of your account; write to info@sunnyyy.com if you want that, and we'll do it by hand.

You also have the right to have the processing of your data restricted while a dispute about it is resolved, and to object at any time to processing we base on our legitimate interests (section 16), including the profiling behind introductions (section 17). Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time; that doesn't make anything we did before unlawful. Withdrawing your consent to the biometric check in section 2 means we can no longer verify you, so in practice it means closing your account. We answer requests within one month. If you think we've handled your data wrongly, you can complain to a data protection authority, for example the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision (Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht, BayLDA), Promenade 18, 91522 Ansbach, Germany, www.lda.bayern.de, or the authority where you live or work.

16. Why we're allowed to use your data

Under the GDPR, every use of your data needs a legal basis. This is which one applies to what:

17. How Sunny picks introductions

Sunny suggests introductions automatically. It compares your profile, your answers, the notes it keeps about you and what you said you're open to with those of other verified students, and ranks who might be worth meeting. For dating introductions, filters such as who you're interested in apply on both sides, so you're only suggested to someone whose preferences you also fit. Under the GDPR this is profiling. It has no legal effect on you and doesn't affect you in a similarly significant way: an introduction is only a suggestion, and you decide whether to take it further. You can decline any introduction. You can ask us why you were or weren't introduced to someone, ask for a person on our team to look at it, and object to this profiling at any time. Since introductions are what Sunny does, objecting means we stop introducing you.

18. Minimum age

Sunny is only for people aged 18 or over. We take your date of birth from your student card; if the card doesn't show it, you enter it once in your profile. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we delete it and its data.

19. Changes to this policy

We'll update this page as the app changes, and call out anything material before it takes effect, not after.
